Researching Genre

Martin Loop - Genres are not pure. They are a blend.
This quote is trying to show that every genre is a mix of different things and its not just one specific thing in one genre. So therefore it is showing that a lot of different things are there to make up one genre, such as in a pop genre there is usually colourful lighting and colourful pictures, the lyrics are usually joyful and happy. This is what the quote means, that different things build up one genre. This could be used in a music video because all of the different things that are put in a music video are to go with the genre of that specific music video.

Jim Collins - Hybridization
The definition for hybridization is "the process of an animal or plant breeding with an individual of another species or variety". This shows that what Jim Collins is trying to say is that a genre is connected or built up with different "species" this species could be guns, and car chases, if it was an action genre. This shows that he is trying to say a lot of different things are joined together and come together to make one genre.

Barry Keith Grant - Genres Have a Repertoire: Forms and Conventions
The fact that Barry Keith Grant said that "genres have a repertoire", the definition for repertoire is "the whole body of items which are regularly performed". This means that he is trying to describe a genre as being a body, with a lot of different things in it to make up one performance. Such as a play, in a play there is lots of different acts and lots of different scenes that make up one play.

Reflection on what genre is
Overall the definition that has came up the most often is that a genre has different things in and those different things is what makes up a specific genre. These things that are in every genre are the characteristics in a genre. This will impact my work because what ever the genre is that I choose I will need to make sure that all of the things that make up this genre are in my product.
