Kasabian-  You're In Love With A Psycho

The music video that i am going to be analysing is You're in love with a psycho. The artist of this music video is Kasabian. The genre that this music video is, is indie rock. This means that in this music video viewers expect to see a costume that is black or darker colours but they are usually wearing quite casual clothing just of a darker colour. This could include black skinny jeans, black hats or black suits.
As shown in the image above the clothing that they are wearing in this shot is quite dark, therefore it is going a long with the usual representation that people would expect to find in a music video of this genre. Also in this genre of music people who are watching this video expect to see that the lead singer is usually at the front of most of the shots, and in this image the lead singer is at the front of the shot. This means that the lead singer is shown in quite a close up shot. This is used so that the audience will recognize the lead singer the most.

However this music video isn't like the usual type of indie rock music video that could be found. This is because the usual things that people would expect to see in a music video with this type of genre aren't in it. This include's;
  • Usually the artists and people in the music video have quite minimal facial expressions, this keeps the artists very plain and serious. They don't usually have a difference of facial expressions because the audience don't usually associate it with this type of music genre. But in this music video the seem to have quite a range of different facial expressions.
  • Also in this genre the bands instruments are usually included in the music video, this is because most of the indie rock bands use instruments like guitars, drums, vocalists and bassists because this is what they use to make the sound that they intend the audience to hear. However this music video could go along with some videos in this genre because not all of the music videos use this, as the director/producer would prefer to go along with the narrative and story line of the song/music video.
This music video is a performance based music video. This is because it appeals to the audience more because they have something to look at. It means that the perform and make a story out of the lyrics that they have made for the song. Throughout the music video narrative runs through it, the whole time. However at different points in the film the performance of the song goes over and within the narrative. So i have done a timeline showing when this happens.

General Technical aspects
The video lasts for 4minutes and 29 seconds and has 70 shots all together. Out of these shots there are quite a few that have been repeated. For example a lot of close up shots of the lead singer are used this is because the audience will know who he is. The general location for this music video is based in a psychic ward, however it does switch between different rooms in the ward, for example the diner hall, the bedroom and the gymnasium. There are a lot of performers, the whole band is i it and also a lot of performers, for example actors and dancers. In this music video there isn't that many costume changes made, as they are all in a similar costume cos the are in a psych ward which means they have the uniform type of clothing on. Also the structure of this music video is good because it follows a specific story and doesn't just repeat the same thing over and over again.

Lyrics and Visuals
The entire song is filmed and based in a psych ward and the lyrics are all about being in love with a psycho. In the music video when it says "medicine time" a few shots after all of the people in the music video are lining up to take their medicine. This means that the lyrics link with the visuals.

Relationship Between music and Visuals
In some of this music video the cut for different shots happen to the beat however some of the cuts just happen off beat and when ever, this means that this video is unexpected and surprising. Solo instrumental bits aren't displayed in this music video as this music video shows a story it doesn't show instrumental parts in it. At the very start of the music video the music in the back ground is a very slow paced sound and the visuals in the video correspond to this as the visuals are at a very slow moving pace.

The record company has tried to make as many sales of this track as possible by uses the lead singer of the band in close ups throughout most of the music video, this is a good thing to do because it is the person that the audience are most likely to recognise. The relationship that this music video has to other music videos by Kasabian are that it follows a unique story, whatever the song is about then that song is usually being recreated in the music videos.

This music video challenges the typical representation that people are seen just to be sexualised and to be looked at, because in this music video there isn't any sexual images or shots for people to be sexualised in. The camerawork that has been used in this music video doesn't make anything look like it has been sexualised apart from one point in the video where a male character is dressed as a woman and has women underwear on. The camera is in a low angled shot and can see up the clothing that he is wearing.  The costume and the dancing of most of the characters challenges the representation that people are sexualised. All of these features have been chosen in this music video because it means that people aren't going to give bad reviews or bad comments about sexualising in this video, this shows that they want to get more audiences to like their music and like their videos.

Conclusion
This video is a video that tells a story. It doesn't show the bad playing any instruments on stage or anything like that. It is like a short film, the lyrics decide what is happening in the video. Also the produce and director of this video have tried to make this video so that it isn't offending anyone, as in they aren't sexualising anyone and they are challenging the views that everyone is sexualised and seemed as a figure to look at. This has developed my ideas for my music video because I could make my music video so that it tells a story, so whatever the lyrics say the on screen visuals back them up.
